Prescription drug abuse occurs when medications are used outside their intended purpose—such as taking higher doses, using someone else’s prescription, or using the drug to get high. While many prescriptions serve important medical purposes,
misuse can quickly lead to dependence, overdose, and serious health consequences.
Certain prescriptions—especially those for pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders—are highly addictive, even when taken as directed. The body can develop tolerance quickly, requiring higher doses and increasing the risk of addiction and physical dependence.
1. Opioids
Includes oxycodone, hydrocodone, and codeine—prescribed for pain but often misused.
Addiction Signs: drowsiness, pinpoint pupils, flu-like symptoms.
2. Benzodiazepines (Benzos)
Medications like Xanax and Valium, used for anxiety and sleep.
Addiction Signs: memory issues, poor coordination, drowsiness.
3. Stimulants
Includes Adderall and Ritalin, prescribed for ADHD and sleep disorders.
Addiction Signs: restlessness, weight loss, insomnia, and high energy.
